Matchday 3 is here! Liverpool vs Arsenal

By Luke Farron

Liverpool and Arsenal are the only two teams who haven’t dropped points in the prem so this will be an interesting game.

The reds have lost their Brazilian No.1 goalkeeper Alisson after just over 45 mins played in the season. The stonewall defence of Liverpool haven’t been as clinical as last season where they were the best defence in the league. This could be due to a high line that is being played. I think the highline is being played due to fitness not being top and trying to catch the opposition offside. The front three however, have been making up for the defence by scoring 6 times resulting in a +4 goal difference.

Arsenal, who’s defence last season left more to be desired, have only conceded one. Their offence has scored half as much as Liverpool. Their goal difference is half of Liverpool’s as well.

Both teams will look to go ahead but they will go about it differently.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson are the key assisters to Liverpool’s attack and they rely on them to be delivering good balls and being in form. Liverpool can also count on occasional balls from the
midfield. Arsenal have only attempted half of the crosses that Liverpool have this season. Arsenal have attempted 14 and the reds have attempted 28! This makes sense looking at how well Trent and Robbo deliver. They are less direct as well, playing 52 long passes. Arsenal will look to break using short passes.

Liverpool’s midfield will also be busy supporting the defence and attack. Klopp will most likely choose Fabinho, who has the most tackles in the squad, to support the squad defensively. Van Dijk could be paired with either Gomez or Matip. If Klopp chooses a highline Gomez is the best option due to his pace. Matip however is good at carrying the ball out from the back and is good with ariel duels. The reds will want to keep out Lacazette and Aubameyang as they can be deadly.

Alex Oxlade Chamberlain who had a brilliant game against Southampton may not start as he is coming back from injury and is slowly being eased back into the squad. I would predict that if ox doesn’t start Henderson who drives the squad forward in midfield will start along with Wijnaldum and Fabinho.

Liverpool ultimately have such a force in attacking with the front three Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah. Although Salah looked tired against Southampton, Mane and Firmino are in good form with Mane and Firmino scoring against Southampton.

Although Adrian made a mistake, he is a good stand in for Alisson and as Klopp said, “I suppose he’s now an official Liverpool goalkeeper!”

Arsenal will focus on Salah opening up opportunities for Bobby and Mane. Mane should get a goal or two with his fine form at the moment.

I think we can all say this game will be a good contest and it is difficult to predict. The crowd will be loud at Anfield as always and I’m going for a 2-1 Liverpool win over Arsenal.
