Speaking to Premier League Productions, Michael Owen believes that Jurgen Klopp has a preference over who partners Virgil van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.
Owen said: “Make no mistake, Joe Gomez, Jurgen Klopp wants to have Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk as his centre-half pairing, that’s what he sees. But over the last season or so, Matip has just, you can’t hardly drop him, if you do you’re resting him and bringing him straight back in. So full marks to Matip, I mean he’s been absolutely brilliant.”
Hard to take Matip out that side. I know many want Gomez, and there's no doubting his potential, but Matip has deserved his spot beside Van Dijk.

Gomez obviously started the season at centre back, but has since been replaced in that position by Matip in each of Liverpool’s games since. Matip is playing like a monster at the minute, and that central defence partnership of him and Virgil van Dijk looks very steady at the moment. Whilst Gomez might be the future, Matip looks to be the present.
Joel Matip performance hasn’t been talked enough yesterday. Was impeccable in defence, there were calls to drop him for Gomez due to pace but he kept Aubameyang quiet.
Had a perfect game rounding it off with a goal, unfortunate not to have a clean sheet. pic.twitter.com/x0ueUqXnZb

Can you drop him? We don’t think so…
